Farm/Co-op Notes: Candelaria is a yearly community lot offering from the Huehuetenango department in western Guatemala. This region has the highest non-volcanic mountain range, Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, in Central America. Candelaria started in 2016 and this year’s lot was grown by 158 small farms with an average size of 22 hectares. The farms have an average yield of 16.9 bags of green coffee per hectare. 80% of the farmers are males with an average age of 51. Three farms that Candelaria features are: Finca Joya Grande, Finca Vasquez, and Finca la Maravilla.

Finca Joya Grande is a small coffee plantation that was established in 1976. Due to the high altitudes and location of the farm, they rely on coffee as their only agricultural product. Finca Joya Grande processes their own coffee cherries and uses the cherry pulp as an organic fertilizer. The farm utilizes a shade-grown coffee system and provides designated forest conservations areas on their land for native plant species.

Finca Vasquez was established in La Libertad, Huehuetenango by Don Jose Vasquez in 1980. The coffee farm has since been passed down to his son and grandson, Genaro and Juan Vasquez.

Finca La Maravilla was acquired in 1997 as an abandoned property. The new owner and his father converted the land into a well maintained coffee operation which uses many natural farming techniques. The farm utilizes hand weeding and uses organic fertilizers composed of chicken manure and coffee pulp for use on the coffee trees. Finca La Maravilla has competed in the regional coffee competition, Cup of Excellence, ranking in the top 10 more than once.

The coffee farms included in this lot, make sure to only pick ripe cherries during harvest. Wet milling practices were used that include the cherries being de-pulped, naturally fermented, rinsed, and sun dried on concrete patios to a specified moisture level. The coffee is screened by size and sorted by weight/density and color before export. The varieties in this offering consists of Caturra 25%, Bourbon 24%, others listed 51%.
